How to do it โ€” step by step

Timing is everything: apply when soil temperatures reach 50โ€“55ยฐF (typically when forsythia or lilac begins to bloom). Use a broadcast spreader for granular products or a pump sprayer for liquid. Apply evenly over the lawn and water in immediately per the label instructions. Do NOT apply to areas where you plan to seed within 6โ€“8 weeks, as pre-emergents also inhibit desired grass seed. Wear gloves and a mask when handling. A single timely application can prevent 90% of crabgrass for the season. Re-apply in late summer for fall weed prevention (goosegrass, poa annua). Skipping this leads to expensive post-emergent treatments and overseeding.
