How to do it โ step by step
Timing is everything: apply when soil temperatures reach 50โ55ยฐF (typically when forsythia or lilac begins to bloom). Use a broadcast spreader for granular products or a pump sprayer for liquid. Apply evenly over the lawn and water in immediately per the label instructions. Do NOT apply to areas where you plan to seed within 6โ8 weeks, as pre-emergents also inhibit desired grass seed. Wear gloves and a mask when handling. A single timely application can prevent 90% of crabgrass for the season. Re-apply in late summer for fall weed prevention (goosegrass, poa annua). Skipping this leads to expensive post-emergent treatments and overseeding.
