How to do it — step by step
Hire a CSIA-certified chimney sweep each fall before you use the fireplace. They'll clean creosote buildup from the flue liner, inspect the damper, firebox, and cap, and check for any obstructions like bird nests. Creosote — a flammable byproduct of burning wood — is the leading cause of chimney fires. Even a thin layer is hazardous; a full level-3 creosote deposit can combust at temperatures exceeding 2,000°F. Average cost: $150–$250.
