Clean and Inspect Window Screens

Pop or slide out each window screen. Lay flat and scrub both sides with a soft brush and soapy water, then rinse with a hose. Allow to dry completely before reinstalling — moisture trapped between the screen and frame can cause rust or mold. Inspect each screen for holes, sagging mesh, or bent frames. Small holes (under 1 inch) can be patched with a screen repair patch from any hardware store. Larger holes or badly bent frames are usually cheaper to replace than repair — pre-made screens cost $10–$20 per window. Check that screen spline (the rubber cord that holds mesh in the frame) is seated and not cracked. Screens are the first line of defense against mosquitoes and flies; a single torn screen in a bedroom is enough to disrupt sleep all summer.
