How to do it โ€” step by step

Turn the unit off at the remote or wall control. Open the front panel by lifting or unclipping it โ€” most units have two plastic tabs on each side. Slide out the mesh filter(s). Rinse under warm water, let them dry completely, and reinstall. While the filter is out, spray the aluminum evaporator fins gently with a no-rinse coil cleaner (available at hardware stores), wait 5 minutes, and wipe away any loosened debris with a soft cloth. Clean the drain outlet and drip tray if accessible. Also wipe down the louvers with a damp cloth. A clogged filter makes the unit run harder, reduces cooling/heating output, and can freeze the coil โ€” potentially costing $200โ€“$400 to repair.
