How to do it โ step by step
Turn off the water heater (gas: pilot; electric: breaker). Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom. Turn off the cold water supply and open a hot water faucet in your home. Open the drain valve and let water flow until it runs clear. Close the drain valve, turn the cold water back on, and restore power/gas. Sediment buildup makes the heater work harder and can reduce its lifespan from 12 years to 8.
