Inspect and Clean Deck or Patio

Use a screwdriver to probe wooden deck boards — if it sinks in easily, the wood has rot and needs replacement. Check for loose or raised screws/nails and hammer or re-drive them. Inspect the ledger board where the deck attaches to the house for rot or separation. Pressure wash the deck surface to remove mildew, algae, and debris. For balconies: check railings for wobble and ensure the floor drain isn't clogged. A well-maintained wood deck lasts 15–25 years; a neglected one can become a safety hazard in under 10.
