How to do it โ€” step by step

Walk beneath or around the home and locate each over-the-top or frame strap and its ground anchor. Check straps for fraying, rust, or cuts. Check anchor heads at ground level for corrosion or heaving โ€” an anchor that has shifted or rusted can pull out under load. Straps should be taut but not so tight they distort the frame โ€” use a tension meter or have a mobile home installer check tension if you're unsure. Check anchor installation depth if the soil has eroded. In high-wind zones (HUD Zone II or III), your home should have both over-the-top and frame ties. A properly anchored home can withstand winds exceeding 100 mph; an unanchored home can overturn in a 60 mph gust.
