Inspect Washing Machine Hoses and Drain Pan

Pull the washing machine out slightly and inspect both hot and cold supply hoses. Look for cracking, bulging, blistering, or corrosion at the fittings. If hoses are more than 5 years old or show any wear, replace them with braided stainless steel hoses ($15–$25 each). Check the drain pan beneath the washer — clear any standing water and make sure the pan drain isn't clogged. A burst washing machine hose is the #2 cause of residential water damage, averaging $5,000–$15,000. In a condo, it also floods your neighbor below.
