How to do it โ step by step
Use a PTFE (Teflon) dry lubricant spray or graphite powder โ not WD-40, which is a solvent that attracts dirt and eventually makes locks sticky. For door hinges: open the door fully and spray each hinge pin, then swing the door back and forth to work the lubricant in. For deadbolts and knob locks: insert the key and spray lubricant into the keyhole, then cycle the key several times. For exterior door locks, also spray inside the latch bolt mechanism from the edge of the door. For sliding door tracks, use a silicone-based spray. Lubricate garage door hinges and rollers with a lithium-based grease. Annual lubrication prevents the most common causes of lock failure and door drag โ a seized deadbolt during a fire or emergency is dangerous.
