How to do it โ€” step by step

Generators that sit unused develop carburetor clogs, stale fuel, and dead batteries โ€” then fail when you need them most. Every two months, run your generator under at least 50% rated load for 30 minutes. For a portable generator: check the oil level first, connect a load (a space heater, shop vac, or other appliances totaling at least half the generator's rated wattage), start the engine, and run for 30 minutes. For a standby generator, most units have a manual test mode on the control panel โ€” run it in 'exercise' mode if automatic weekly exercise isn't configured. While running, listen for unusual sounds, check for fuel/oil leaks, and verify the voltage output is within normal range (110โ€“125V for 120V outlets). Check the fuel level and add fresh stabilized fuel if needed. If the generator fails to start or runs roughly, schedule service before the next storm season.
