Service Whole-House Humidifier

Whole-house humidifiers (bypass or fan-powered units mounted on your furnace) improve winter comfort and protect wood floors and furniture from drying out. But without annual service, they develop mineral scale, mold, and can actually distribute contaminated air. Service at the start of each heating season (fall). Turn off power to the furnace and close the humidifier's saddle valve (the water supply valve). Remove the water panel (also called an evaporator pad or scale control insert) — it's inside the unit, usually held by a plastic frame. If it's crusty white with mineral deposits, replace it (they're $15–25 and should be replaced every season in hard water areas). While it's out, clean the interior of the humidifier housing with a white vinegar solution to dissolve mineral scale. Inspect the distribution tray (the part that drips water onto the panel) for mineral buildup — soak in vinegar if needed. Check the drain line for clogs — a clogged drain causes water to overflow onto the furnace. Check the water supply line for kinks or drips. Reinstall everything, open the saddle valve, restore power, and set the humidistat to 30–40% relative humidity (lower if windows show condensation). A functioning humidifier reduces static electricity, protects hardwood floors, and can make 68°F feel as comfortable as 72°F.
