How to do it โ step by step
A security system you haven't tested is a security system that might not work. Test annually and after any power outage or network change. Call your monitoring company before testing โ they can put your account in 'test mode' so the fire department or police are not dispatched. Test each zone: walk through every door and window sensor by opening and closing while in test mode โ the keypad should indicate which zone triggered. Test every motion detector by walking through its coverage area. Test the panic buttons on all keypads. Test the smoke detector zones if integrated. For wireless systems: most panels display a 'sensor signal strength' โ anything below 3 bars for critical zones needs the sensor moved or a repeater added. Test the backup battery: disconnect power from the wall transformer and verify the panel stays on (backup should last 4โ12 hours depending on your system). Test the siren โ let it run for 5 seconds to confirm it's still functioning. For monitored systems: verify the monitoring center receives your test signals by asking them to confirm after your test mode window. Update any outdated contact information with your monitoring company, especially emergency contacts. Replace any sensor batteries that are showing low (most modern panels indicate this) โ a sensor that goes offline during an actual event provides no protection.
