How to do it — step by step
The temperature and pressure relief (T&P) valve is a critical safety device that vents the tank if pressure or temperature becomes dangerously high. Without a working T&P valve, a water heater can rupture with explosive force. Locate the valve on the side or top of the tank — it has a small lever and a discharge pipe directed downward or to a floor drain. Place a bucket under the discharge pipe. Lift the lever for 2–3 seconds to let a small amount of hot water discharge, then release. The lever should snap back and stop the flow completely. If it drips after releasing, the valve has failed and should be replaced immediately (a $15–$25 part). If the lever is seized and won't move, replace the valve. A valve that has never been tested can corrode shut and fail to open when needed.
